Course Introduction

A design can be technically correct and still be difficult, inefficient, or unnecessarily risky to build. Restricted access, unrealistic sequencing, conflicting interfaces, tight tolerances, temporary works requirements, equipment limitations, and insufficient consideration of actual site conditions often become visible only after construction begins. By that stage, resolving them can lead to redesigning, rework, delays, additional cost, and disruption to surrounding activities.

Boost Consulting & Training has designed this course to develop the ability to review engineering designs through the eyes of construction before problems reach the site. Participants will learn how to challenge design assumptions, examine construction methods and sequences, identify buildability constraints, evaluate multidisciplinary interfaces, consider temporary conditions, and recommend practical improvements without compromising the intended engineering performance.

The main concept of this course is to bring construction knowledge into engineering decisions early enough to transform technically acceptable designs into solutions that can be built safely, efficiently, and with fewer field complications.

Course Objectives

  • Distinguish constructability and buildability considerations from conventional design review.
  • Identify design features that may create difficulties during construction.
  • Evaluate access, space, equipment, workforce, and site constraints before execution.
  • Review construction sequences and dependencies from an engineering perspective.
  • Assess tolerances and interfaces between civil, structural, architectural, and building services works.
  • Incorporate temporary works and temporary construction conditions into constructability reviews.
  • Develop practical design improvements that simplify execution while maintaining technical intent.
  • Conduct structured constructability reviews at appropriate stages of project development.
