Course Introduction

A practical, step-by-step program that takes you from opening Power BI to building clear, reliable dashboards. You’ll learn how to clean data, build a simple and correct data model, create the key metrics your business needs, and design dashboards that are easy to read and act on. We’ll also cover how to publish and share safely, keep data refreshed, improve speed, and view reports on mobile. The week ends with a small real-world project you can present.

Course objective

  • Build a simple, reliable data model so numbers add up correctly.
  • Create business measures with DAX (e.g., totals, % margins, YoY, YTD).
  • Design clear visuals and dashboards with drill-down and helpful tooltips.
  • Publish and share in the Power BI Service with the right access.
  • Set up refresh, improve performance, and document your work.
  • Bring data into Power BI and clean it with Power Query.

Course audience

Anyone who builds or uses dashboards and KPIs (analysts, BI/report builders, team leads in finance, operations, marketing, etc.).

Course Outline | Day 01

Get the Data Right

  • When to use Power BI vs. Excel.
  • Connect to common sources (Excel/CSV, databases, SharePoint).
  • Clean and combine data with Power Query (fix types, remove errors, merge).
  • Build a simple data model (fact table + lookup tables) and a date table.
  • Organize your file (clear names, folders, basic notes).

Hands-on: Clean a messy sales file, connect tables, add a date table, and check results in a quick matrix.

Course Outline | Day 02

Measures & Core Visuals

  • Create measures (not hard-coded columns) for totals, margins, and trends.
  • Use common DAX patterns (e.g., CALCULATE, YTD, previous period).
  • Build go-to visuals: bar/line charts, cards/KPIs, tables, and matrices.
  • Apply clean formatting, themes, slicers, and simple hierarchies.

Hands-on: Build key measures (Revenue, Margin %, YoY, Running Total) and a “Business Overview” page with drill-down.

Course Outline | Day 03

Tell the Story

  • Add drill-through pages, bookmarks, buttons, and simple navigation.
  • Use helpful visuals (e.g., decomposition tree, key influencers) where they make sense.
  • Add dynamic titles, useful tooltips, and simple what-if controls.
  • Lay out pages neatly and make them easy for anyone to use (basic accessibility).

Hands-on: Design an executive dashboard with an overview page, a details page, drill-through, and bookmark-driven views.

Course Outline | Day 04

Share, Secure, and Speed Up

  • Publish to the Power BI Service (workspaces, apps, permissions).
  • Share the right way; understand data lineage and certified datasets.
  • Restrict data by role (Row-Level Security) and test it.
  • Set refresh schedules; understand gateways and incremental refresh basics.
  • Improve speed using the Performance Analyzer and simple modeling tips.
  • Keep light documentation (data dictionary, assumptions, version notes).

Hands-on: Publish your report, create an app, set access, add RLS, and schedule a refresh.

Course Outline | Day 05

Mobile, Quality Check & Capstone

  • Create a mobile-friendly layout.
  • Run a simple QA: visuals correct, filters right, measures tested, performance okay, accessible.
  • Plan how changes move from draft to live.

Capstone Project:

  • Build a complete dashboard for a realistic scenario (e.g., retail or finance) with a provided dataset.
  • Present (5–7 min): the goal, key metrics, how users navigate, what decisions it enables, and how you’ll refresh/share it.

Power BI data visualization is the process of transforming raw data into interactive charts, graphs, maps, KPIs, and dashboards using Microsoft Power BI. It enables users to explore data, identify trends, monitor performance, and make data-driven decisions through dynamic and visually engaging reports.
Yes. Power BI is beginner-friendly, especially if you have basic knowledge of Excel and data analysis. Most beginners start by learning:Connecting to data sources.Cleaning and transforming data with Power Query.Creating charts and dashboards.Building data models and relationships.Writing basic DAX calculations.Publishing and sharing reports.
It depends on the task:Excel is ideal for spreadsheets, calculations, ad hoc analysis, and smaller datasets.Power BI is better for interactive dashboards, large datasets, automated reporting, real-time analytics, and business intelligence. Many organizations use Excel and Power BI together, with Excel for data preparation and Power BI for visualization and reporting.
No. The basics of Power BI are relatively easy to learn, and many users can build simple reports within a few days. More advanced topics such as DAX, Power Query (M), data modeling, performance optimization, Row-Level Security (RLS), and Microsoft Fabric integration require additional practice and hands-on experience.
