An infrastructure network is the complete system of hardware, software, and communication components that allow computers and devices to connect, communicate, and share data within an organization or across the internet. It includes:Routers and switchesServers and data centersFirewalls and security systemsCables, wireless access points, and cloud systems
The main types of network infrastructure are:1. LAN (Local Area Network)Covers a small area like an office or buildingHigh-speed internal communication2. WAN (Wide Area Network)Covers large areas like cities or countriesExample: the internet3. MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)Covers a city or campus area4. Wireless Network InfrastructureUses Wi-Fi, mobile networks, and wireless access points5. Cloud Network InfrastructureUses cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, etc.) for networking and services6. Hybrid NetworkCombination of on-premise and cloud infrastructure
In networking support and operations, L1–L4 refer to levels of technical support or expertise: L1 (Level 1 – Basic Support)First line of supportHandles basic issues (password resets, connectivity)Follows scripts and guidelines L2 (Level 2 – Technical Support)More advanced troubleshootingHandles network configuration and deeper issues L3 (Level 3 – Expert/Engineering Level)Advanced problem solvingNetwork design, architecture, and root cause analysis L4 (Level 4 – Vendor/Architect Level)Highest levelWorks with vendors or core infrastructure designHandles complex system-wide issues
A VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) is mainly a Layer 2 (Data Link layer) technology in the OSI model. Why Layer 2?VLANs operate using MAC addresses and switchingThey logically separate networks within the same physical switchThey control broadcast domainsBut there is a Layer 3 connection:To communicate between VLANs, you need Layer 3 routing (Inter-VLAN routing)This is done using a router or Layer 3 switchSo:VLAN itself = Layer 2Communication between VLANs = Layer 3
The OSI Model (Open Systems Interconnection Model) has 7 layers that explain how data moves across a network:1. Physical Layer (Layer 1)Cables, switches, electrical signalsSends raw bits (0s and 1s)2. Data Link Layer (Layer 2)MAC addressingSwitches and VLANsError detection3. Network Layer (Layer 3)IP addressing and routingRouters operate here4. Transport Layer (Layer 4)End-to-end communicationTCP and UDP protocols5. Session Layer (Layer 5)Manages sessions between devicesStarts, maintains, and ends connections6. Presentation Layer (Layer 6)Data formatting, encryption, compression7. Application Layer (Layer 7)User-facing applications (web browsers, email, apps)
