Course Introduction

Measuring Mechanical Vibrations and Methods of Measurement is a fundamental discipline for ensuring the reliability and longevity of industrial machinery. In modern manufacturing, understanding Vibration Characteristics is the key to effective Condition Monitoring and preventing catastrophic structural failure. This course provides a technical deep dive into how we quantify oscillatory motion and the specialized instrumentation used to capture high-accuracy data.

Throughout the Measuring Mechanical Vibrations program, you will explore the physical principles of Frequency, Amplitude, and Phase. We cover the primary Methods of Measurement, including the use of Piezoelectric Accelerometers, Laser Doppler Vibrometers, and Eddy Current Proximity Probes.

Whether you are performing Rotational Balance checks on turbines or analyzing Resonance in civil structures, this course equips you with the expertise to interpret Time-Domain and Frequency-Domain (FFT) signals for advanced Predictive Maintenance and Fault Diagnosis.

Vibration is typically quantified using Displacement (mils or microns), Velocity (inches/sec or mm/sec), and Acceleration (g's). The choice of parameter depends on the frequency range; for instance, Velocity is the industry standard for general Machine Health Monitoring
The Piezoelectric Accelerometer is the most widely used sensor due to its wide frequency range, durability, and lack of moving parts. For high-temperature or low-frequency applications, engineers might also use Velocity Transducers or Proximity Probes
FFT is a mathematical method used to convert a complex vibration signal from the Time Domain to the Frequency Domain. This allows engineers to identify specific "peaks" that correspond to distinct faults, such as Misalignment, Unbalance, or Bearing Wear
Contact methods involve mounting sensors (like Accelerometers) directly to the machine housing. Non-contact methods, such as Laser Vibrometry or Eddy Current Probes, measure the movement of a surface without touching it, which is ideal for rotating shafts or delicate structures
By constantly Measuring Mechanical Vibrations, maintenance teams can detect subtle changes in a machine's signature long before a failure occurs. This allows for scheduled repairs, reducing Downtime and maintenance costs significantly
