Course Introduction

Project Planning and Control Excellence is an advanced, practical program designed to strengthen participants’ ability to develop robust project plans, establish realistic baselines, monitor performance, forecast outcomes, and implement timely corrective actions throughout the project lifecycle.

The program integrates the key dimensions of scope, schedule, cost, resources, risk, change, and performance measurement into a unified project-control framework. Participants will learn how to translate project objectives into structured work packages and schedules, establish control baselines, analyze deviations, evaluate schedule and cost performance, and produce reliable forecasts for management decision-making.

A strong emphasis is placed on practical project-control techniques including Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), network scheduling, Critical Path Method (CPM), resource planning, Earned Value Management (EVM), variance analysis, forecasting, change control, trend analysis, dashboards, and recovery planning.

By the end of the program, participants will be equipped to move beyond simply reporting project status toward proactively identifying emerging problems, assessing their impact, and recommending effective corrective and recovery actions.

Project planning and control is the process of defining project objectives, developing schedules, allocating resources, managing costs, monitoring progress, and controlling risks to ensure a project is delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
The five common stages are:Define project scope and objectives.Develop the project plan and schedule.Allocate resources and estimate the budget.Identify risks and create mitigation plans.Monitor, control, and update the project plan throughout execution.
Project planning focuses on creating the roadmap before and during project execution, including scope, schedule, budget, and resources. Project control focuses on tracking performance, measuring progress, managing changes, and taking corrective actions to keep the project aligned with its objectives.
APMG Project Planning & Control™ is a professional certification from APMG International that validates knowledge of project planning, scheduling, estimating, budgeting, risk management, progress monitoring, and project control techniques. It is designed for project managers, planners, schedulers, and project control professionals who want to improve project delivery and governance.
